Surgical Scalpel Positions

Surgical Scalpel Positions

A scalpel, or lancet, is a small and extremely sharp bladed instrument used for surgery, anatomical dissection, and various arts and crafts (called a hobby knife).

Methods of handling scalpel

1. Dinner knife position: Used when making a long incision and when separating muscle from bone.

2. Writing or Dissecting or Pen-holding position: Used for delicate or fine dissection.

3. Fiddle-bow position: Used to make incision with minimal pressure over delicate structures. This grip is neither firm controlled.

4. Grasping position: Used to make long sweeping as in amputation surgery. The cutting edge of knife faces the surgeon.
