About Dr. Edwin Rwebugisa Lugazia, MD MMed. FCTA, MBA – Dr. Lugazia brings a wealth of experience and expertise in the field of Anaesthesia, critical care, and patient safety, making him an invaluable addition to our leadership team.

With a remarkable career spanning over 25 years, Dr. Edwin Lugazia has made significant contributions to the healthcare landscape, particularly in Tanzania and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. Currently serving as the Head of Department of Anaesthesiology at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), Dr. Lugazia also holds the role of Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologist. His oversight extends to anaesthesia and critical care clinical training at renowned institutions including the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI), Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), and the Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI).

Over the past decade, Dr. Lugazia has led and coordinated efforts aimed at addressing the shortage of anaesthesia and critical care workforce while driving quality improvement initiatives. He has been instrumental in developing strategies to enhance patient safety in low-resource settings, with a keen focus on Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) integration. His commitment to self-sufficiency has led to advocacy, program development, and implementation, ultimately contributing to sustainable healthcare practices in Tanzania and the wider SADC region.

A key figure in the development and implementation of the National Surgical Obstetric and Anaesthesia Plan (NSOAP), now ECO services, in Tanzania, Dr. Lugazia’s influence has been pivotal in enhancing anaesthesia and critical care services. His dedication to patient safety and quality of care is reflected in his involvement in advanced surgical interventions such as open heart surgery, interventional cardiology services, and renal transplants.

Dr. Lugazia’s achievements extend beyond clinical practice. He is an active member and facilitator of the Tanzania Institute of Directors (IoDT) and serves as President of the Society of Anaesthesiologists of Tanzania (SATA). His leadership roles also include being Deputy Secretary General of the College of Anaesthesiologists of East, Central and Southern Africa (CANECSA), where he plays a crucial role in advancing the field on a regional level.

His global impact is notable as well, as a member of various committees and working groups under the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) and World Society for Intravenous Anaesthesia (World SIVA). Dr. Lugazia’s commitment to healthcare excellence is further underscored by his involvement in the SADC Health Ministers Technical Expert Working Group on Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia services.

Dr. Edwin Rwebugisa Lugazia holds MD and MMed degrees from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia from CIHS-India, and an MBA in Corporate Management from Mzumbe University (MU). 

About Dr. Abbas Abdulzahra Alhasani, FIBMS, FRCS, FACS – Dr. Alhasani’s outstanding credentials and extensive experience in the field of Pediatric Surgery make him a valuable addition to our organization.

Dr. Alhasani serves as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine, University of Basra. His academic background, which includes a Fellowship of the Iraqi Board of Medical Specializations (FIBMS), Fellowships in the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), and the American College of Surgeons (FACS), reflects his dedication to the highest standards of surgical excellence.

As a Consultant Pediatric Surgeon in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Basra Children Specialty Hospital, Dr. Alhasani has demonstrated a commitment to providing exceptional care to pediatric patients. His role as the Director of Basra Children Specialty Hospital further emphasizes his leadership within the medical community.

Dr. Alhasani’s contributions to the field of Pediatric Surgery, particularly in the realm of minimally invasive surgery (MIS), are remarkable. The Pediatric Surgery Unit at Basrah Children Specialty Hospital, under his guidance, embarked on a journey into pediatric MIS in 2014. Despite humble beginnings, they have made significant progress, now performing advanced MIS procedures even on neonates, overcoming numerous challenges and obstacles along the way.

His dedication to advancing pediatric surgery aligns perfectly with TORG’s mission to enhance surgical care and healthcare outcomes globally. Dr. Alhasani’s expertise in MIS and his commitment to improving healthcare for children will undoubtedly have a profound impact on our organization and the broader field of surgery.

In addition to his clinical accomplishments, Dr. Alhasani’s involvement in academic research and his commitment to sharing knowledge are evident in his abstract on the evolution of pediatric MIS. This commitment to advancing the field mirrors TORG’s values, making him an ideal addition to our Advisory Board.

 

About our Honorary Patron – Dr. Tariq uz Zafar

He is a 1971 MBBS holder from King Edward Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan. He was a Trauma and General surgeon in the Armed Forces till 1985 and a 1971 War Veteran. He has a Masters degree in Healthcare and Hospital Management and has a special interest in Hospital Planning and Design. He teaches Hospital Management at MBA level at several institutes in Karachi, Pakistan. “The Lord has made the Surgical Team the most blessed of all Artists, because we work to create healing in the most rewarding of all mediums …. human flesh and blood! About Darlene B. Murdock, MSN, BBA, RN, CNOR, CSSM – With an extensive background in perioperative nursing and a proven track record of volunteer leadership, Darlene brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our organization.

Currently serving as the National Vice President of AORN (Association of periOperative Registered Nurses) from 2022 to 2024, Darlene’s dedication to advancing the field of perioperative nursing is truly commendable. Her outstanding contributions have not only earned her recognition but have also led to positive changes within the healthcare community.

Darlene’s career is marked by her significant role as a certified perioperative registered nurse at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. Her specialization in caring for critically injured patients showcases her unwavering commitment to providing high-quality care even in the most challenging situations.

One of Darlene’s remarkable qualities is her ability to drive positive change. Her leadership skills have been pivotal in various contexts, and her influence has extended to national platforms. She has delivered impactful talks on topics ranging from diversity, equity, and inclusion to the specialized care of trauma patients. Darlene’s insights and knowledge are not only valuable within the walls of hospitals but also in shaping healthcare practices on a broader scale.

In addition to her clinical and leadership accomplishments, Darlene is an accomplished author and editor. She has contributed to the AORN Journal and served as editor-in-chief of multiple newsletters, showcasing her dedication to advancing knowledge and best practices in perioperative nursing.

Darlene’s educational background further underscores her commitment to excellence. She holds a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Western Governors University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

About Dr. Gaston Nyirigira, MD, MMED, FCA (ECSA) – It is our privilege and honor to introduce Dr. Gaston Nyirigira, MD, MMED, FCA (ECSA), a distinguished Consultant Anaesthesiologist and Pain Specialist at King Faisal Hospital in Rwanda. Dr. Nyirigira serves as the Head of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Services and holds the position of Senior Lecturer at the University of Rwanda.

Dr. Nyirigira’s professional journey has been characterized by a profound commitment to addressing acute and chronic pain management, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). His dedication to improving the quality of life for patients facing pain has driven him to pursue additional training in pain management beyond his background in anaesthesiology.

In the realm of acute pain management, Dr. Nyirigira has identified and tackled various barriers that hinder effective treatment, especially in resource-constrained settings. His insights into the challenges faced by patients and healthcare systems in LMICs have been instrumental in shaping his approach to this critical issue.

Dr. Nyirigira’s dedication extends to the field of chronic pain management, where he is a strong advocate for non-pharmacological approaches. He recognizes the limitations of medication-based treatments, often driven by affordability concerns in limited-resource settings. His focus on lifestyle changes as an integral part of chronic pain management demonstrates a holistic and patient-centred approach to care.

One of Dr. Nyirigira’s core beliefs is that the prevailing mindset surrounding chronic pain management can and should evolve. He envisions a future where pain management is not solely reliant on medication and where patients have access to affordable, effective, and comprehensive care.
