Some doctors in Lithuania got the shock of their lives recently when they treated a man who was suffering from severe abdominal pain.

The patient, who has not been named in public for confidentiality, was admitted to a hospital in the Baltic city of Klaipeda.

An X-ray showed several pieces of metal lodged in his stomach. Some of the objects measured up to 10 centimeters. Soon after the scans, the team of doctors found out the man actually had more than a kilogram of nails and screws in his belly. He had swallowed all the metal objects over the last month.

The doctors managed to successfully remove all the metal objects after a three-hour-long operation, according to a Guardian report.

“During the three-hour operation with X-ray control, all foreign bodies, even the smallest ones, in the patient’s stomach were removed,” surgeon Sarunas Dailidenas was quoted as saying by the news website.

The head surgeon at Klaipėda University Hospital, Algirdas Slepavicius, told local media he had ‘never seen anything like it’ in his life. Following the operation, the hospital provided media with a photograph of the surgical tray that was almost filled with nails and screws.

In September, a man had to undergo life-saving surgery after he swallowed an entire Nokia 3310 phone.

The 33-year-old from Pristina in Kosovo swallowed an early 2000s model made by the former Finnish company. It was the model that came to be popularly known as the ‘brick’ phone after it was launched in the year 2000.

The phone became lodged in his stomach and he was rushed to a hospital, where Dr. Skender Telaku was given the task of safely removing the device.

When the man underwent scans and tests, it was found that the phone was ‘too large for him to digest’ and was posing a threat to his life because of its corrosive battery that contained harmful chemicals. Luckily for the man, the surgery lead by Taljaku went well and the phone was removed from the stomach.
