My Journey into Nursing

By Owokole Adebusola Nursing is a profession I have always looked upon with respect and I strongly believe that the role of a nurse can be very challenging and hectic at times, as well as rewarding and fulfilling. My mother is a nurse, and seeing the satisfaction she feels every day by helping people in her job inspired my own interest in the field. I knew from the time that I was very young that nursing was something I wanted to do with my life.

I have oftentimes aspired to do something in my career that is challenging, interesting, and makes a difference in people’s lives on a daily basis. Dealing with patients and their families, and helping them through what is often a difficult time for them is extremely satisfying. For me, becoming a nurse was living my life doing what I was passionate about, adding energy and lifting the spirits of patients.

As a nurse, I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of medical settings, which included hospital, operating room, home health, and primary care environments and have enjoyed the experience of learning the routines in each type of facility. During my clinical posting into the operating room, I developed a sense of curiosity into why the scrubbed team always robed and masked mysteriously.

My first professional job was in the surgical care field and as I have always loved a good challenge, this enhanced my pursuit of a career in perioperative nursing, which made me to enroll for this specialty training. After which, I specialized in all areas of major and minor surgical procedures performed in hospital environment and in my current role as a perioperative nurse, I am able to preoperatively, intra-operatively and postoperatively care for the surgical patient, and also perform scrub and circulatory roles.

To this end, I have advanced my nursing career theoretically and practically and I aspire to discover more ways of thought that are currently unknown to me yet vital in this increasingly evidence based nursing practice and take part in strengthening nurse-client relationships that are bred globally and fuelled by cross-cultural professions.

My attempt to join this rank is enthusiastic and resolute.
