Celebrating Women’s Achievements #IWD #InspireInclusion

Meet the #AllWomen team from the operating room!
From OT technician, Scrub nurse, Floor nurse, Anaesthetist and Surgeons, we had a team of extremely dedicated and talented women working together. As we worked together as a single unit, everyone doing what they do best to deliver exceptional results, I felt empowered and inspired to share my workspace with such incredible women!

Celebrating Dr. Carole “Gert” Mayes: A Trailblazer in Perioperative Nursing

At The Operating Room Global (TORG), we believe in recognizing and celebrating the outstanding contributions of individuals who are making a significant impact in the field of perioperative nursing. Today, we shine a spotlight on Dr. Carole “Gert” Mayes, a distinguished leader and researcher whose dedication to advancing perioperative nursing has left an indelible mark on the profession.

Dr. Mayes’ journey in perioperative nursing is nothing short of inspiring. As the Manager of Nursing Excellence and IRB Co-Chair/Coordinator at Rutland Regional Medical Center, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to excellence in patient care. But her influence extends far beyond the walls of her medical center.

In 2022, Dr. Mayes presented groundbreaking research on the Perioperative Nurse Turnover Decision-Making Theory at the AORN Expo. Her presentation sparked a passionate discussion among attendees, highlighting the challenges faced by perioperative leaders lacking operating room experience. Dr. Mayes didn’t stop there. She seized the opportunity to advocate for change within AORN.

Proposing the idea of a position statement on perioperative leader qualifications, Dr. Mayes took bold steps to amplify the voices of perioperative nurses. With determination and perseverance, she navigated through the intricate process of policy-making within AORN, culminating in the creation of the AORN Guiding Principles for the Surgical Services Director Role. This landmark achievement is a testament to Dr. Mayes’ unwavering advocacy and dedication to advancing the profession.

In addition to her research and leadership roles, Dr. Mayes actively contributes to AORN’s eChapter as a member of the Board of Directors and the Education Committee Chair. Her passion for evidence-based practice and research is evident in her role as the Chair of the Research & EBP Support Committee, where she continues to foster innovation and knowledge dissemination.

Today, we celebrate Dr. Carole “Gert” Mayes for her outstanding contributions to perioperative nursing. Her dedication, vision, and tireless advocacy serve as an inspiration to us all. Thank you, Dr. Mayes, for your unwavering commitment to excellence and for making a profound difference in the lives of perioperative nurses worldwide.

Let us continue to honor and uplift the remarkable women who are shaping the future in the Operating Room. Happy International Women’s Day!
